These photos were taken at the Inauguration of Wandlebury Country Park's Birdhide and during a special event organised by State of Design at the Corn Exchange Cambridge to promote the use of timber from sustainable sources. The structure that provided the backdrop for the art exhibits now forms the backbones of the Wandlebury birdhide. In doing so, we have shown a way in which entertainment, public education and support for the environment can be implemented simultaneously and sustainably by using natural materials responsibly, designing with recycling in mind for both the short and long term and above all, for the benefit of the local community, three of the most important aspects of a successful circular economy.

In-house experience and Passivhaus certification enables State of Design to design houses or extensions to super energy efficient Passivhaus standard and in doing so, exceed the RIBA 2030 Challenge criteria. For many years our designs adopted Passivhaus design principles and exceeded building regulations standards without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.
As well as being up to date with latest renewables technology, at State of Design we place great emphasis on the importance of providing goods and services using as many local resources as possible, whether human or material. Our multi-disciplinary design and production background has given us an insight into wide varieties of local resources and how to tap into them. This knowledge, we often find useful when designing a building, a theatrical set, an art installation or even just a publicity campaign. The potential of these resources is further maximised by working closely with local reliable builders and suppliers whom we have teamed up with in the past and achieved great results. The outcome of this approach is a consistent product well rooted in its environment. Being close to its source of origin also means that any maintenance works will be cost-effective and well at hand. However, if we cannot find your desired product locally we will consider the next best supply source for it, with minimum impact on the environment and the development timescale.
We also feel strong about the role of design and its place within the local community. Our designs are considerate and inclusive at many levels and whenever feasible, we will work closely with our clients to identify and explore ways in which their project and its social environment could be mutually beneficial.
